Stone was Director of JPL from January 1, 1991, until he retired in April 2001. Dr. Stone was an associate professor at Caltech in 1972, when he became project scientist for the Voyager mission. The photo above was taken in December 1973.

One of the first people hired at GALCIT Project #1 in November 1941 was photographer George Emmerson (1913-1994), an emigrant from Newcastle, Great Britain. Audrey Voice and Mary J. Edward Carroll Stone was born on January 23, 1936 in Knoxville, IA. He earned his Associate of Arts Degree in 1956 from Burlington Junior College before continuing his studies at the University of Chicago. After receiving his Masters of Science Degree in 1959, and Doctoral Degree in Physics in 1964, he joined Caltech as a research fellow in physics.
